First Quinterns call our paid internship program excellent, valuable experience

The first Quinterns of 2012 give our new paid internship program high marks for delivering what we promise – paid, hands-on, real-world experience.  As one Quintern put it, “Quincy has truly created one of the best internship programs in the nation. I was not running errands or doing pointless activities. I was in the field and getting a real hands on experience.“  We’re pleased about that but what’s more – we know we can make our program even better for the next wave of best and brightest students.

As part of our curriculum, we ask all of our Quinterns to fill out exit surveys just before their internships end. The questions are designed to help us fine tune what works and eliminate what doesn’t. When asked to rate their satisfaction with the overall experience from one (poor) to five (excellent),  our first Quinterns rated their satisfaction as 4.8, excellent. The survey results confirm the importance we place on assigning a mentor to each Quintern and on following a well-defined curriculum. Our first Quinterns gave the program a perfect 5.0 rating for the variety and quality of skills they learned. As one Quintern said, “This internship really brought me out of my shell as a journalist and required more fast-paced movement than classes offer. I utilized skills with unfamiliar equipment that I am now very comfortable with and hope to integrate these tools for my ideal position as a multimedia journalist.”

Our goal in hiring Quinterns and in growing the inventory between their ears, is to hire the best of them after they graduate and to help all of our Quinterns to land great jobs. Our first Quinterns rated the value of their experience in helping them to find employment at  4.8 out of 5. And 100% of our Quinterns want to be considered for employment in the Quincy family of companies when they graduate.  It doesn’t get much better than that.

The Quinternship program works because of  the hard-working men and women in our television stations, newspapers and radio stations. The students praised their knowledge, their patience and their passion for our business.  If you’re interested in becoming a Quintern, take the first step by filling out our online application here. Your information will be routed to the Quincy location(s) you choose and you will be kept up to date on your application status.

KTIV wins four awards from Northwest Broadcast News Association

KTIV News 4 has been recognized with four Eric Sevareid Awards from the Northwest Broadcast News Association at the organization’s awards banquet in Bloomington, Minnesota on Saturday, April 1st.

KTIV received two first place awards: Best Weather and Best Newscast. KTIV’s first place award for weather was for the station’s coverage of the “Night of Tornadoes,” April 9, 2011. KTIV was also awarded first place for Best Newscast for the station’s coverage of Missouri River flooding last June. The station also received Awards of Merit for Best Sportscast and for News Series for coverage of flooding in Yankton, South Dakota.

“It’s our job to be a resource for our viewers every day,” says KTIV Director of News and Operations Bridget Breen. “We are honored to be recognized for those efforts by the NBNA.”

The Eric Sevareid Awards are named for the North Dakota-born and University of Minnesota-educated journalist Eric Sevareid, best known for his work as a correspondent for CBS Radio and Television. Each year, the Northwest Broadcast News Association presents awards to the best work done by broadcast news operations and journalists working in small, medium and large markets in the six-state region of Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska working in the fields of radio, television and online.

KTIV welcomes its first Quintern!

Qunicy’s new internship program, appropriately dubbed “Quinternship”, has created quite the buzz among educational institutions in the Siouxland area. Just last week, KTIV welcomed its first “Quintern” to the team, Christine Bindner! Christine is a student at Morningside College in Sioux City, and joins the likes of Matt Breen and Kristie VerMulm in the news department.

Christine joined KTIV as its first Quintern.

Christine is originally from Des Moines, Iowa. She enjoys spending time with her friends and with her husband, Dean. She describes herself as funny, sarcastic, intelligent and caring. More personally, her favorite toy as a kid was GI Joe (it wasn’t that personal!).

KTIV would like congratulate Christine on joining Siouxland’s News Channel! With her determination, she’s sure to reach new heights in broadcast.

Station visits at KTIV

KTIV often has visitors to its studios. From prominent lawmakers to elementary students shadowing their favorite anchors; there are few that haven’t graced the hallways of our building. Friday morning however, students from Northeast Community College were able to interact with our staff from the comforts of their classroom in Norfolk, Nebraska.

KTIV integrates a mobile device into their set up to go live from nearly any location.

Through some newly acquired technology, News 4 was able to set up a video conference and interact with the students in real time. Each student had the opportunity to ask questions about KTIV and trends in the broadcast industry.  The class, taught by US92′s reporter Brian Masters, was very intrigued by station’s switch from analog to a digital signal. KTIV was fortunate enough to have guest engineer, Tim Morgan of KTTC, field their questions. With over 30 years of experience, Tim was able to educate the students on the origins of television and where it’s going next.

The students also had questions about what its like to work as a reporter in the field. That was a question perfectly suited for KTIV’s Chief Photographer Tia Heidebrecht. Tia has been at several stations in the Midwest and was quick to point out that Multimedia Journalists need to multitaskers. They’re charged with not only being the eyes and ears for the station, they also must communicate with the Internet Director to update the station’s multiple platforms.

On the subject of the Internet, the students asked several questions about the how the station competes in the digital space. Internet Director Kyle Martens enjoyed seeing their enthusiasm! Kyle reminded the students while KTIV strives to be the leader in all things Siouxland, digital is a daily battle. Viewers have a myriad of ways to get information and it’s the newsteam’s job to seize that opportunity. Tia, Tim and Kyle were happy to help the students and wish them the best in their endeavors.

“Media isn’t just a journey, it’s an adventure. Everyone has their good days and their bad, but hard work will always pay off ,” said Tia Heidebrech, KTIV’s Chief Photographer.

Tia Heidbrecht and Tim Morgan explain how their stations compete in the digital age.

NJPA honors the New Jersey Herald with several awards

The New Jersey Herald’s new website won second place for Best Overall Website in the New Jersey Press Association’s 2011 Better Newspaper contest and swept first, second and third place for Best Online House Ad or Campaign.

The newspaper also garnered 11 other awards in editorial and advertising categories.

The website, launched at the end of November, offers comprehensive coverage of the Sussex County area, including local news, national and state news and sports. Online features, like live streaming video, blogs, a local video forecast, mobile and more, create a dynamic environment for up to the minute, in-depth coverage of the news.

“The whole team here worked hard to launch the new site and is dedicated to enhancing it as an ever-evolving, robust and engaging resource for readers. It is very meaningful to be recognized by the NJPA,” Internet Director Amy Paterson said.

Special Project Manager Lee Williams showcased the Chef Herald event, 9.11.01 tribute lawn signs and Northern New Jersey Pet Expo in her series of award-winning online house ads. She also won awards for two special pages and a free-standing insert.

“It is great being recognized by other newspapers in the industry for developing programs that not only suit the needs of our customers, but also help promote the different products that we have available,” Williams said.

Reporter Steven Reilly, who joined the newspaper March 2011, won a second place environmental writing award. Reilly, who is now the newspaper’s police and courts reporter, submitted three stories on three issues, “Solar panels keep Sparta couple in eco-friendly mode”; “Christie dumps ‘green’ program”; “Pipeline hearing Wednesday; meeting will focus on High Point plan.”

The newspaper won two awards for real estate display ads and a third place award for its service and business directory. The newspaper’s Chef Herald card won a first place nod, as did its promotional ads for its 2011 Candidates Debate and its page devoted to the Northern New Jersey Pet Expo.

KWWL hires first Quinterns of 2012

Second semester is here and so is our first crop of Quinterns.  KWWL was glad to welcome Katie Huinker to the staff on January 3.  Katie is a junior at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, working on a BA in Communication & Electronic Media, with a minor in journalism.

Katie Huinker, first Quintern of 2012

Katie Huinker, first Quintern of 2012

Her first job was a big one: helping the desk the night of the Iowa Caucuses.  Katie helped track satellite feeds from candidate headquarters so we could record them or take them to air live.   Among Katie’s instructors at UNI: veteran KWWL anchorman Ron Steele.   Katie hopes to be a TV news anchor some day, but for now she’s learning the basics: shooting and editing video, reporting and producing.

Our second Quintern, Sarah Petit from the University of Iowa, will join us later in January.  She will work primarily in our Iowa City bureau.   We’re delighted to be able to offer these paid internships and help “grow our own” talent pool.

Quincy stations, newspapers take next steps in Quinternship hiring process

Across our company people are now engaged in reviewing online applications submitted for our paid internship or “Quinternship” programs. They’re also spreading the word about the program to internship coordinators at local schools. We wouldn’t be surprised if you spotted one of our posters in a school near you.

Funding for our Quinternship program starts January 1, 2012 so if you’re interested, now is the time to apply. You can start by filling out the online application, which you’ll find by hovering over the “Internship” navigation element at the top of nearly every page.

To make things easier, here’s another way to get to important links:

Click here for a Quinternship Program description. Beyond that, Quinterns can expect to be paired with a mentor and to have a detailed curriculum of learning experiences, including doing real work.

Click here for the online Quinternship application. A word of advice about that. We’ll be asking for contact information for your advisor as well as references. You’ll get through the form faster if you have that information handy. Completed applications will be sent to the Quincy television, radio and newspaper company locations you’ve chosen as first choice and alternate choices, for their review. They’ll choose the leading candidates for the next step, which includes looking at your resume, work samples and an in-person interview. Candidates chosen to become Quinterns will then go through our hiring process because you’ll become an employee of the company while you intern with us. When we say you’ll get a real-world experience, we mean it!

If you have a question, click here to reach our Quinternship Coordinators at each location. If you have a technical issue or a suggestion while navigating the survey or the careersatquincy.com website, we would love to hear from you so we can make the experience even better. Send your comments Quincy’s Senior Internet Director, Jon Okerstrom.

We’re excited by what’s about to happen in 2012. We hope you are too.
