WAOW welcomes new Sports Director

Sports Director Lauren Magiera joined to Newsline 9 team on Monday, April 23rd, after seven years in Alaska. The Chicago native attended the University of Alaska – Anchorage on a gymnastics scholarship. While pursuing her degree in communications, she began her broadcasting career as an intern at the ABC affiliate in town. From there, she moved into sports reporting and anchoring. Now she’s ready to cover sports in north central Wisconsin.

Lauren is an avid hunter and fisher, like many of WAOW’s viewers and WAOW.com’s readers. We look forward to seeing how that passion translates into unique stories about the great outdoors. Lauren joins WAOW’s team as the Sports Director, anchoring the 6:00 and 10:00 newscasts.

KWWL’s Quinternship program reinforces Katie Huinker’s love for the news business

I just wanted to express how much I enjoyed my internship at KWWL. I have developed so many skills over the duration of my time here and am so grateful for that. I would not acquire this kind of experience in a classroom. This internship has further enforced my love for the news business and my desire to be a part of it.

The only thing I would change about the program would be the quintern having a primary mentor who is doing the job that they wish to do. I had a few mentors over the course of time at KWWL including Janelle Haible, Kera Mashek, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey. I feel that Kera and Colleen have helped me the most because I want to be a multi media journalist one day. They have taught me so much.

I loved my internship at KWWL and am grateful to have had the experience!

Denice Pelster Joins Storm Track 7 Team

New meteorologist to be part of weekend Today In Iowa

Denice Pelster is joining the KWWL Storm Track 7 Weather team as morning meteorologist. She will appear on the weekend edition of Today in Iowa, co-hosting with Danielle Wagner. Pelster’s first day on the air will be April 21st.

A Midwest native, Pelster grew up on the family farm in Nebraska, where she earned a healthy respect for the power of the weather.

“I was terrified of storms as a young child,” says Pelster. “but I learned how critical the weather is when it comes to agriculture.”

Her interest in weather led to a decision to pursue a career in meteorology. She earned her meteorological degree from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.

“We’re excited to have Denice on the team,” said Dan Schillinger, KWWL News Director. “She has great energy and the skills we look for as part of Storm Track 7.”

“I’m looking forward to working with Mark, Jeff and Eileen.” Said Pelster. “KWWL has such a great reputation when it comes to weather coverage. It’s an honor to be a part of that.”

Pelster previously worked on the air at KLKN, in Nebraska. In her spare time, she enjoys outdoor sports as well as reading books–everything from biographies to murder/mystery thrillers. She admits, however, that the home remodeling project currently being undertaken by her and her husband leaves little time for fun.

Kelly Wilson hits the ground running as Interactive Managing Editor at The Quincy Herald-Whig

A familiar face is now leading the Quincy Herald-Whig’s interactive efforts. Kelly Wilson brings to the job a wealth of experience as a former staff writer, copy editor and page designer at the Whig. A couple of years ago, she left for a communications position at the local hospital. Now, we are pleased to say that Kelly has returned as the Whig’s new Interactive Managing Editor.

Strategically, Kelly and Managing Editor Don Crim are the content drivers in an evolving Whig newsroom. Their partnership symbolizes the increasing importance of what we’re doing on our interactive platforms and how that work can in turn support the newspaper.

As part of Kelly’s orientation, Quincy’s Senior Internet Director, Worldnow’s Senior Client Services Manager, Quincy’s Mobile Coordinator and others spent last week doing some intensive training and strategic discussions. As any great leader would, Kelly is now learning as much as she can about the Whig’s team members, their workflow and the technology. Based on that foundation, she and the Whig’s leadership team will design and implement a plan for taking our interactive business to the next level.

Emerging goals include delivering more great content to our online customers in a faster, more efficient way and drawing more attention to some of the best content that’s already being produced. A specific example of that would be the many audio slide shows that combine powerful photojournalism with interviews and natural sound. You can watch some examples here.  We look forward to seeing what Kelly and her team can do and welcome her to the interactive team.

Monster Garage Sale!!!

Another successful year for the Monster of a Garage Sale! This was the Herald-Whig’s 7th annual and is the largest event for the paper. The Civic Center was completely jammed packed with 150 garage booths and over 2,500 attendees. The Whig used mobile as a way of promoting admission coupon offers to the public but also had a major sponsor for the text message. Papa Johns included with the admission coupon a Pizza Special Offer, this offer helped build Club Whig. 696 people text the word SALE to redeem an admission coupon for the event. This is becoming a standard for all future events for the Herald-Whig.

Words from WAOW’s first Quintern – Owen Stevens

On any given day, I would cover a number of sporting events.  While winter sports were in season, I covered boys and girls hockey, boys and girls basketball, wrestling, and gymnastics. During the spring season, I covered track and field and softball.

The most valuable part of Quinternship is, without a doubt, the practical field experience gained.  Working with professionals in the field has been terrific.  Sean and Kevin have been extremely helpful and patient with me as I have become more comfortable with the job.

Interacting with people and conducting interviews with athletes and coaches has been a great experience as well.

The most surprising thing about my Quinternship was how rapidly things moved and how quick you had to be.  I knew the news business was one that was fast paced, but it definitely took me awhile to get used to the speed and working under hard deadlines.

Thank you for the excellent opportunity,

Owen Stevens
